Sonny Liston, one of history`s most dominant world champions, inaugurated his reign by defeating a boxer whose career was ultimately concluded by Muhammad Ali.
Except for a singular defeat in his eighth professional bout, Sonny Liston remained undefeated until his initial encounter with Floyd Patterson in 1962.
At 37, Floyd Patterson was the reigning Heavyweight World Champion, a true legend in boxing, having proudly held the title since his victory over Archie Moore six years earlier.
Despite Patterson`s esteemed status, he was keen to face the formidable challenge posed by the rising star, Sonny Liston. However, he was soon to discover firsthand the immense power that cemented Liston`s place among the greatest Heavyweight boxers of all time.
Sonny Liston Delivers Consecutive Knockouts to Floyd Patterson in Title Bouts
With an impressive record of 33 Heavyweight victories, Liston secured a championship opportunity against Patterson on September 25, 1962. The outcome proved disastrous for the defending champion.
Patterson immediately succumbed to the legendary power of Liston’s punches, which solidified Liston`s reputation as an almost invincible force in the boxing world.
Liston needed only two minutes to dispatch the champion in a rapid-fire encounter. His assault was relentless; from the opening bell, he barraged Patterson with blows, denying him any respite throughout their championship clash.
A barrage of powerful left hooks sent Patterson to the canvas, resulting in a knockout and securing Liston a dramatic, albeit short-lived, title victory.
The subsequent rematch proved no less challenging for Patterson. Although he managed to endure for an additional four seconds in their Las Vegas confrontation, Liston`s performance appeared even more formidable.
Liston delivered a relentless series of blows, sending the challenger to the canvas three times in rapid succession, thereby securing an effortless and dominant victory to retain his world title.
Although Muhammad Ali would later claim the belt from Liston in his inaugural title defense, «The People’s Champion» also shared a significant history with Patterson.
A Decade Later, Muhammad Ali`s Victory Over Floyd Patterson Forces His Retirement
Despite the defeat by Liston, Patterson`s career was far from over; he continued to compete at the elite Heavyweight level for another ten years.
In 1965, Patterson even contested the world title against Ali, the very belt Ali had previously won from Liston. Ali defeated him over 12 rounds. However, it was their rematch seven years later that would ultimately mark the conclusion of Patterson’s boxing career.
The 1972 rematch served as Patterson’s final professional bout, as he retired following a brutal defeat at the hands of «The Greatest».
Ali’s relentless assault caused severe swelling above Patterson’s left eye, severely impairing his vision by the seventh round.
At that critical juncture, his corner decided to throw in the towel, preventing him from continuing and thus bringing Patterson’s illustrious career to a rather subdued end.
